Assalaamu-Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullah,
I have a questian that needs answering and I would appreciate it if you could anser it for me.
Must one remain seated or standing while the Iqaamat is being called out?
thank you for your time and wisdom.
Answer: Assalaamu-Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullah
During the time of the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him and His Family.
The companions would arrive early for the prayer and sit down. This would give them time to gather there thoughts and prepare themselves for the forthcoming prayer.
At the appointed time of prayer the Mu'addin would arise and recite the Iqamat. Upon complete the sentence "I bear witness that the Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" The blessed Prophet would enter the mosque from a side door attached to His house. The companions would rise and the Prophet would take His place as Imam and the Prayer would start. This act in unison was in accord with the etiquettes surrounding conduct in the mosque and before prayer.
This can be called the Sunnah of the companions. It is in stark contrast to non ahlus Sunnah wal jamaah Mosques today.
People come into the mosque and stand with legs astride in imposing military postures, wearing clothes only fit for the gym as if they are impatient for the prayer to start. In other Mosques the Imam has been denigrated to the back row and has to make his way through the ranks to get to the front. Most of these mosques start the Iqamat well after everyone is standing and ready to pray.
It begs the question, 'What is the point of re-enacting a Sunnah if it’s an empty ritual devoid of content?'
Even though it is not a blameworthy trait as such, but it is also blindingly obvious that Islam is about beauty and order.
The Hadith of the Prophet comes to mind, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.” [Muslim]
Small things like this lessen the reward in prayer and may weigh heavily upon us on the day when even an atoms weight of good will be sought after literally as if life depended on it.
The four imams are in agreement with the pre etiquettes of approaching prayer, however the difference is only at what point should the Imam raise his hands. At the end of the Iqamat or near the end after the Mu’addin has recited "I bear witness that the Prophet is the messenger of Allah.
And Allah is the giver of success
