My parents always say we are sunni and that some of my relatives are wahabi. But my cousins always maintain they are sunnis. When ive tried asking my parents what is the difference between us and them, they just say that wahabis dont go to khatams, believe in buzurgs or do dua for the dead. But surely there must be more to it than just this. Please can someone explain for me in lay mans terms what all this means?

I DONT THINK YOUR PARENTS HAVE THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT WAHABIS THATS WHY THEY HAVE TOLD YOU THINGS WHICH ARE NOT TRUE. TO BEGIN WITH, WE ARE NOT WAHABIS, WE ARE AHLUS SUNNAH WAL JAMMAH. WE DO BELIEVE IN BUZURGS AND WE DO DUA FOR THE DEAD. JUST BECAUSE WE DO NOT PROSTRATE TO THE THEIR GRAVES OR CALL UPON THEM FOR HELP DOES NOT MEAN WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN THEM. WE ONLY PAY THEM THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE AND DO NOT CROSS BOUNDARIES BY OVER PRAISING THEM. AS FAR AS KHATAMS ARE CONCERNED, WE CONSIDER THIS TO BE AN REPREHENSIBLE BIDDAH AND THERFORE DO NOT PARTAKE IN SUCH MATTERS. WE ARE UPON THE TEACHINGS OF THE PROPHET (SAW) AND HIS COMPANIONS. THIS IS ONE OF THE SIGNS OF THOSE WHO WILL ENTER JANNAH FROM AMONGST THE 72/73 SECTS. THIS LABEL WAHABI HAS BEEN GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWERS OF SHEIKH MUHAMMAD IBN ABDUL WAHAB (RA), WHO WE BELIEVE IS SOMEBODY WHO REVIVED TRUE MONOTHEISM AND FILTERED OUT ALL THE POLYTHEISTIC BELIEFS AND PRACTICES WHICH HAD SLOWLY CREPT INTO THE UMMAH.

The Wahabis have some inherently wrong beliefs such as:
- they believe that ones Actions are included in Iman. They believe such things like if one purposely misses his obligatory prayers he becomes a disbeliever.
- they say that whoever asks for intercession from anyone other than Allah SWT, that person becomes a disbeliever, i.e they do not believe in intermediaries between oneself and Allah SWt.
