Salaam,

I wonder what sort of experiences different brothers and sisters have when they learnt how to read Quran. Some of us were taught at home, some attended Madrassahs and some may have gone to a local neighbours house to learn from a guest molvi or the local aunty ji. And when you completed areading Quran al kareem, how old was you? And did it stop there like some sort of formality or did you carry on learning, ie by memory, learning the rules of tajweed etc? It would be interesting to know different experiences of brothers and sisters.

Salaam,

Brother I started reading the Quran from the age of 7 yrs old. I was quite a late starter and if it wasnt for my mother bribing me with 20p I dont tihnk I would have ever attended mosque. I went to the local mosque and had several teachers who taught me the basics of arabic to reciting the Quran. At the age of 9 I started to learn the Quran by memory and it took a total of 2 yrs to complete.

The 2 years were tough and gruelling at times but perserverance prevailed. In the 2 years I was never absent and I woke up at 5 in the morning everyday to memorise my verses before going to school. After school ended I attended mosque from 5-8pm everyday whilst my friends would be out doing all the chilling and having fun. It was the toughest experience of my life.

I continued to go mosque after completing the memorisation of the Quran and this was coupled by starting my high school education. My teacher sent me to various places in the month of Ramadhan to perform traawih in particular, Birmingham; Reading; Burton and London. Performing in front of a large audience has always been a daunting experience but thankfully I always held my nerve.

However, after all the long hard work I must admit that learning the Quran has been the best achievement of my life and I hope that on the day of judgement it gets me out of a sticky situation. And thats me and my Quranic experience.

Im sure there are others who have had the experience of reading the Quran. Please share your experience with the forum users.

Thanks

Maximus
