The literal meaning of Urs is wedding and it is for the reason that the bridegroom are called "Uroos". the date of demise of the friends of Allah and Buzurgs is called Urs because, when the angels who questioned in the grave (Nakeerain) test the deceased and find him to be successful, they say, "Sleep like a bride who will not be awakened by anyone except for the person who is most beloved to her"- Mishkaat, Baabu Ithbaatil-Qabr.

Because these angels have called them "Uroos" on that data, it therefore becomes the day of "Urs".

Another reason is because, on this day, the angles will reveal the beauty and splendor of Rasoolullah (SAW) and ask him, "What did you say about this man?" He will reply, "He is the Uroos (adorned personality) of all creation. The entire creation has attained splendor through him." Meeting the beloved is the day of 'Urs', and it is for this reason that the day is called Urs.

This is a short introduction about Urs. If any one has questions please feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer.

Mashallah, thank you brother for this information. Obviously I have heard of the term Urs but never paid attention to it in the sense how the word originated.

Please keep the informative posts coming along.

Salaam,

Mashallah an interesting read. But the question arises as to the legitimacy of celebrating such an event on a yearly basis. Are we able to provide evidence to support such an event? It would be interesting to read what proofs exist so that we are able to withstand scrutiny in the case of those who look to speak against Urs.

Lets say you believe the person whom you buried to be a saint (wali) and you even host his urs the the following years. How can you be sure that this person is a wali. You probably don't even for certain whether the person died a muslim, so how can the sainthood or wilaayah of a deceased be known? There have been instances where pious muthaqee people who have passed as kaafirs. Consequently, we can say that instead of getting thawaab through this process you may be getting a large amount of the oppositte. This is my viewpoint? InshaAllah I hope brothers will comment.
