Salam to you all,

Thinking about how we achieve unity, I came across the following verse from the Quran.

The Quran says, "As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no part in them in the least: their affair is with God. He will in the end, tell them the truth of all that they did" (Quran 6-159)

The above surat that I have cited from the Quran mentions the division of Islam into sects and our instruction to stay away from this division. Would one then consider it our duty to bring muslims togeather and make unity, even though some may differ on interpretations of some specific contentious issues?

What do we need to do as muslims to preserve the unity of a muslim with another muslim, your thoughts would be welcome. Jazakallah

It is the duty of Muslims to love and respect the Family of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) because the Holy Prophet has said in a hadith, “When I am loved, then my family members, whom I love should also be loved.” (Tirmidhi)

Salaam,

Quite an interesting observation. I have spoken with a few learned people in the past regarding uniting with adherents of other aquaid to work on common goals affecting the muslims. From what I have been told, it is OK to work with deviants as long as the goal to be acheived benefits muslims generally and not just benefits a particular group or organisation. One example is where so many of our youth are being drawn into gang cultures and drug abuse and the community gets together to put an end to this by raising public awareness, through seminars, conferences etc. Another example might be something like the Iraq conflict where muslims of all different denominations and even non muslims marched together to bring an end to the war. We would not be particularly keen on working together to promote talks for example on the seerah of the Messenger of Allah (saaw) as we may have different viewpoint regarding the Messenger (saaw). Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saaw) know best.

I see Brother Ghulam e Meeran,

For the sake of not further damaging muslim relations would we be correct under this objective if we stayed quite to a particular aquaid that we did not agree with?

I just want to point out the we the ahle sunnah wal jamat, did not emerge in the last week or 100 years, we have been following the same rulings of the Quran and implementation of the sunnah as the pious Sahaba, Tabaeen, Taba Tabaeen. Learning the interpretation/application and execution of rulings of the Quran and Sunnah from the Sahaba and the pious following them. Therefore we do not have any issues or necessarily vent anger at any other newly (speaking in relative terms) formed group who feel that they will interpret Islam another way (in its literal context without seeing how the pious jurists have applied knowledge and meaning to rules of Allah and explanation of hadiths).

Salaam,

Not at all brother. In fact I'm of the opinion that if we turn a blind eye, we may party to spreading deviance. However, I still feel that if there is no aquaid being discussed and instead issues such as Iraq War, Zionist Occupation of Palestine or other issues affecting Muslims in general are at the forefront of the agenda, then there is no harm in getting together with these people. I remember as a youngster I attended a huge protest where Markazi Jammat e Ahle Sunnat got together with Wahabis, Shias etc to protest the publication of the Satanic Verses. No issues of aquaid were discussed, but should that have been the case Ahlus Sunnah have never been known to shy away from such matters. Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saaw) know best.

Salaam

The quranic verse that you have cited was revealed about the Jews and Christians. Al-`Awfi said that Ibn `Abbas commented,

[إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُواْ شِيَعًا]

(Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects...) "Before Muhammad was sent, the Jews and Christians disputed and divided into sects. When Muhammad was sent, Allah revealed to him,

[إِنَّ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُواْ شِيَعًا لَّسْتَ مِنْهُمْ فِى شَىْءٍ] (The verse you cited)

(Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no concern with them in the least.) It is apparent that this Ayah refers to all those who defy the religion of Allah, or revert from it. Allah sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth so that He makes it victorious and dominant above all religions. His Law is one and does not contain any contradiction or incongruity.

Clearly, from the above there is an order by Allah not to divide the religion. In terms of uniting muslims, we can only be united once we endeavour to emulate the ways of the Prophet and their companions. We cannot unite with deviant sects on issues of aqeedah as those who do not follow the ways of the Prophet are destined for a holiday in hell. This message is reiterated by Allah's beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh):

Abdullah bin Amar (RA) relates that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said "Surely things will happen to my people as happened earlier to Israelites, they will resemble each other like one shoe in a pair resembles the other to the extent that if anyone among the Israelites has openly committed adultery to his mother there will be some who will do this in my Ummah as well, verily the Israelites were divided into 72 sections but my people will be divided into 73 sections, all of them will be in the fire except one." The companions asked, 'Who are they O Messenger of Allah,' Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "They are those who will be like me and my companions."

The above hadith identifes that even in the religion of Islam there will be sects; a resemblance Muslims will share with the Israelites. Therefore uniting with deviant sects on matters of aqeedah could prove detrimental to oneself.

May Allah keep us on the straight path.

Maximus
