After making Ghousl and performing wadu perfectly. Put on clean cloths and apply perfume. Tell your family not to disturb you for at least an hour. Close the door and dim the lights. Light an incense stickif you wish. Offer two rakas nafl prayer and ask Allah to forgive your sins.

Sit down and contemplate that now you are in the presence of your Lord. No one on earth can see what you are doing. Imagine that you are the only person on this earth and your room is the only room in the world. Know that Allah has full knowledge of what you are doing and can see you. With great humility start by sending praise upon the holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and then to remember Allah using all the beautiful praises of Allah starting from whatever you want first.

As you are doing the dhikr try to keep your mind focused on the meaning of the words. If tears start to swell then that is a good sign let them drop as the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said, seven people will be shaded by Allah under his shade on the day when there will be no shade save his. One of them is a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes start to shed tears.

Know that now you are enveloped in the rahmah of Allah and what fear does one have when he is enveloped in Allah’s mercy! The angels have started to sit row upon row, rank upon rank, and one above the other up to the heavens just to hear the remembrance of Allah uttered from your tongue.

Just like people line up to see a showman, he being the centre of attention know that now you are in centre stage surrounded by the best company of angels and that they are here for you. Repeat the beautiful praises of Allah, immerse yourself in his mercy, loose yourself in him. With singularity of purpose know that at this time it is just you and Allah, nothing else matters anymore.

As you keep this up for a while you will feel something deep inside you stir. Something that was yearning to make a connection has awakened after ages of dusty sleep. It will make you feel elated, light of head and soft of heart. Different shades of reality may manifest themselves to you as slowly the veils are lifted. Keep in this state for as long as you feel. Once you have drunk what was destined for you and have enjoyed what was destined for you, slowly start to come back down from the heights by starting to beautify the words dragging them out full of emotion.

Once you have come back down sufficiently pause after uttering the name Allah dragging out the breath and thing of what you have just said. Feel the gravity of the moment. You have just uttered the praise of the only one that is worthy of praise. The One most perfect the most beautiful the most sublime. All the beautiful praises are for you alone O Allah. The only One. Sit there for about 5 minutes utter the name not on your tongue this time but in your heart.

At first it will be difficult but with time your heart will utter the Divine name so load that others around you will hear it beating in your chest as if it is about to explode with emotion.

Concentrate on your inner self. Feel the names of Allah penetrating your cells, your very spirit. Let the names circulate there energy throughout your being. Swim in the energy; drown into it as if it were a bottomless ocean. Become one with the name of Allah. Realize the mysteries of the soul, yourself and the very universe. Once you have seen what needed to be seen, understood what needed to be understood, slowly bring yourself out of the levels and back down to the material level.

After this cease every activity and just sit there head bowed experiencing the majesty and grandeur of your Lord. Try to think of his attributes and how he has fashioned his creation and then think of how mighty in power He is the Lord of us all. Feel your self a small and helpless being who is now sitting in front of his lord. Seeking his refuge from his wrath, asking for his bounty. Know that you have no power to do anything; all power is from Allah alone. Let tears well up in your eyes again. Let your heart explode with love, awe, fear, humiliation. Seek his protection. Seek his paradise seek whatever comes into your heart. Seek to see his beautiful face in the hereafter.

If you don’t feel anything don’t feel that it is not working as you will not always feel anything in the beginning. The essence is to get a regular relationship going through your dhikr of Allah. So regular that the angels will start to wait for you patiently even before you have started your zikr. Your room and indeed your house will become like a beacon of light that will shine out into the heavens and inshallah on the Day of Judgment will become a guiding light by Allah’s permission. The angels will home into this light. In today’s age when most of the world is blindly following its own lust and desires and darkness has descended on this earth. Your dhikr of Allah will indeed look even more brilliant from the vantage point of the angels. You are in the presence of the beloved.  A lover seeking his beloved. Your very actions of sweetening the environment and perfuming your self for Allah is so beloved to him that we cannot possibly comprehend. You have left this world and taken time out in secret especially for the Divine. A slave and his master in private. Subhanallah. How lucky are those slaves of his that Allah has blessed so that they do this on a regular basis. Over time you will see a shine come to your face softness and refinement to your character and a deepening of your personality. Slowly the veils of knowledge will be opened to you. You will enter states of clarity and consciences that the everyday worshipper of Allah is oblivious to. Allah will grant you a deeper understanding of himself. You will begin to see the grandeur of Allah indeed you will perceive his power that will humble you even more. Tears flowing you will become even more beloved to Allah. Remember you have taken slices out of your life and denied your nafs just for the sake of Allah and to be in his company. Remember you are never alone. Allah is always with you. Gradually over time you will achieve such a state that you’re every thoughts, very actions will be for the sake of Allah. You will achieve a level of god consciousness that only the Walis have. In such a state you will hesitate to commit even the slightest sin fearing it like a normal person fears death, you will strive to become perfect in the eyes of Allah. You will have developed. Ihsan.

The day will come inshallah when Allah will make you his friend! Just think for a minute, a friend of Allah. You will have achieved what every lover sets out to achieve. The world will not matter to you any more. You will live in this world but be not of it. Your level of awareness of Allah will be so acute and great that you will see the glory of Allah everywhere. Indeed you will become oblivious to everything except Allah. The only word in your heart, in your mind on your breath and on your tongue will be Allah. Slowly every cell in your body will become fine tuned to the word Allah. Every cell, hair and molecule in your body will recite the word Allah. Your only joy will be living for the sake of Allah and you will desire nothing but to meet you’re beloved. Your name will echo through the seven heavens and earth as the angels talk about you. In awe that a slave of Allah has sacrificed his life of a few moments so he an enjoy looking at the face of Allah forever in the hereafter.

May Allah give us all he tawfeek to become a friend of Allah.

My God, do not give me back to myself
Do not let me settle for anything but You.
In You I hide escaping from my ruin
Please, do not give me back to myself.
